‘The Female Age’ was curated by three members of the AGE-C project, Asja Makarević (Goethe University Frankfurt), and two members of the Faculty of Theatre and Film, Babeș-Bolyai University, Andrea Virginás (associate professor) and Boglárka Angéla Farkas (PhD student). The programme was further supported by the highly esteemed Romanian film producer Ada Solomon, who produced the selection’s Child’s Pose (Poziția copilului, Călin Peter Netzer, 2013). Accompanying the selection, the curators also wrote an article, which presents the included films and can be accessed here. The film programme will remain available until the beginning of April to all EFA members on the European Film Academy’s VOD platform.

The jury’s comment: “In this film, the director masterfully uses an experimental cinematic approach to portray the story of a family and their journey through time and memories. In this journey, the camera works like a witness, and it transitions between characters and sometimes blinks to create a visual language that breaks, all the time, the line between reality and illusion.”

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is one of the most important events in the European cinema and reached the 29^th edition this year.

Lecture abstract

Between the end of World War II and the late 1980s, the Polish film industry produced nearly twenty films about the Holocaust that approached the topic within safe boundaries. These films, which were allowed to be shown, did not threaten the national community’s good feelings, did not address Poland’s version of antisemitism, and most importantly, avoided the sensitive topic of Polish society’s attitude toward Jewish persecution. Each film aligned with the existing historical policy, which either used this issue instrumentally or ignored it altogether. After 1989, both historiography and cinema began to explore topics that were previously forbidden, taboo, or distorted in official state narratives. With the end of political restrictions and the start of open public debate, Polish cinema initiated a delayed process of reckoning and revising Holocaust memories. But has this process truly taken place? Have Polish filmmakers genuinely worked to dismantle myths, fill in gaps, and correct distorted Polish memories of the Holocaust? This brief speech aims to examine how the memory of the Holocaust has been shaped in Polish feature films since 1989.

Bio

Piotr Forecki is a professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. He has held scholarships at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure at Yad Vashem. His research focuses on how the Holocaust is portrayed in popular culture, especially in films and comics. He also studies anti-Jewish violence in post-war Polish history, antisemitic discourse, right-wing populism, and memory studies.

Cluj-Napoca, May 2025 – Originating in Bern, Switzerland, the Ethnokino International Film Festival is expanding its cultural and cinematic horizons to the heart of Transylvania, with an edition hosted in Cluj-Napoca by the Faculty of Theatre and Film, Babeș-Bolyai University.

Under the inspired metaphor of “the magic of communication”, Ethnokino Cluj-Napoca presents a vibrant and diverse program that invites audiences to discover the power of cinematic language to transcend geographic, political, and ideological boundaries. Films from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, India, China, and Kenya will bring to the forefront authentic stories about communities in search of a better life, and about individuals who, through their dreams and struggles, generate a global dialogue of empathy and solidarity.

A special moment of the festival is dedicated to screenings by teenagers from the Pata Rât community, who, through their eyes and the honest language of the camera, convey powerful messages about acceptance, understanding, and belonging.

Beyond film screenings, Ethnokino Cluj-Napoca becomes an interactive platform for cultural expression. Participants are invited to explore a series of theater performances, live concerts, and creative workshops – in film, photography, and ethnology – where fascinating topics such as witchcraft, myths, and both Romanian and universal folklore will be explored. Traditional Ukrainian, Chinese, and outlaw-inspired music will enliven the festival evenings, transforming the event into a true celebration of diversity and togetherness.

Ethnokino Cluj-Napoca promises not just a cinematic experience, but a profound intercultural journey, where each participant is invited to become an active part of a global dialogue grounded in imagination, empathy, and mutual respect.

Festival Program:

În Stradă. Povești despre ne/dreptatea locative (In the Street. Stories about in/justice housing) is a coupé theater performance which puts the spotlight on housing as a fundamental right and the scale of housing problems faced by an overwhelming majority of the population, from precarious rents to forced evictions.

Using the forum-theatre method, În stradă discusses two themes alternately: evictions and rents. Forced evictions, deeply unfair, violent and traumatic processes that violate fundamental human rights, continue to happen in Romania and leave precarious people homeless.

Overpriced and unaffordable rents in proportion to wages, difficulties in finding rents, landlords refusing to rent based on various discriminatory criteria (ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc.), lack of tenancy agreements and the constant danger of losing rent are another facet of housing injustices.Looking at these situations as part of a wider spectrum, where the interests of the free market take precedence over the lives and well-being of the majority of people, we see how housing difficulties affect a large part of the population.

În stradă brings together several stories of housing injustice, illustrating that housing problems are not individual hardships, but a crisis of capitalist society, where housing security has become an affordable privilege for the few. The performance is a call for awareness, action and solidarity for the respect of the fundamental right for housing.
